County Monaghan covers an area of 1,294 kmē belongs to the province of Ulster and is one of the 3 Ulster counties that are not part of Northern Ireland. The Irish name Muine Cheain means "the Land of the little hills", referring to small hills that have been formed during the ice age. The capital Monaghan City, has a wonderful town centre made up of four connected squares. The County Musem Museum has won the Council of Europe Award and has a large display of history and archaeology to preserve the counties heritage. County Monaghan has a large number of lakes, such as Lough Egish, Lough Fea and Mucky Lough. The 3 mountains Mullyash Mountain, Slieve Beagh, Coolberrin Hill and the rivers Fane, Glyde and Blackwater determine the territory of Monaghan. Visitors will find unspoiled nature, beautiful landscapes and a wide range of wildlife that can be admired in the Wildlife Educational Centre in Castleblayney.
